Coursera is another fantastic platform offering free online courses from some of the world’s top universities and educational organisations.
With an extensive catalogue, you can find a large range of courses on almost any topic imaginable.
A great place to start might be taking the Introduction to Big Data course from the University of California, San Diego.This short introductory course explores the current hype around Big Data, the problems it can solve, and the skills required to become a ‘data scientist’.
This course constitutes the first part of a wider 6-course series, allowing users to achieve a Big Data Specialization upon completion.
MIT Professional Education – Tackling the challenges of Big Data
MIT Professional Education runs digital programs for global audiences across a range of industries, including numerous Big Data courses.
They are currently offering a program on ‘Tackling the challenges of Big Data’, which begins on the 6th October 2015 and runs for 6 weeks through until November 17th 2015. The cost of this program is $545.
This course includes five modules, covering 18 topics and five assessments aimed at reinforcing the concepts learnt throughout each of these modules. The five modules are; Introduction and Use Cases, Big Data Collection, Big Data Storage, Big Data Systems and Big Data Analytics.
To earn a Certificate of Completion in this course, participants should watch all the videos, and complete all assessments by the due date, with an average of 80 percent success rate.
Associate Certified Analytics Professional (aCAP)
Expected to launch in the fall of 2015, this prestigious program is targeted at entry level analytics professionals, those who have appropriate knowledge of the analytics process, but are not experienced enough to have earnt the full CAP credential already.
This rigorous general analytics certification provides users with an end-to-end understanding of the analytics process, including methodology, model building, deployment and model lifecycle management.
Upon successful completion of the aCAP exam, which can be taken at more than 700 computer-based testing centres around the world, attendees will acquire an aCAP credential.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) – Big Data Technology Fundamentals
Amazon Web Services is now offering free online Big Data courses through their AWS training programme.
Big Data Technology Fundamentals is a free, 3 hour web-based training course, aimed at providing a good general knowledge of the tools and technologies used in Big Data solutions. Whilst some prior knowledge of basic programming languages is required, this course is primarily targeted at individuals who are new to Big Data concepts.
This Big Data course spans four separate modules, covering; an introduction to Big Data, Introduction to MapReduce and Hadoop, Data Analysis using Pig programming and finally, Big Data querying with Hive.
