Cloud BI and the Future Workplace: Breaking Down the Walls
The increased flexibility offered by Cloud BI solutions is leading to a dramatic change in the landscape of the traditional workplace.
Could the office soon become a thing of the past? If so, will Cloud BI be attributed to the shift?
The ability to remotely access management information anywhere, and at any time, means that employees are no longer subject to location constraints. As a result, the role of the office as a physical entity is becoming increasingly obsolete as companies shift their operations to Cloud technology.
This is a view supported by Nikolaus Kimla who argues on a recent Wired article: “The infrastructure of yesterday was made up of brick, glass and steel offices full of tightly compacted bodies furiously typing away. Today, the corporate infrastructure is composed of lightning fast servers, high-speed connections and the careful choice of software applications to make it all possible.”
In order to determine whether remote access can provide a sufficient replacement for on-site operations and how this can be translated for business intelligence systems, it is necessary to look at a number of the benefits that may be gained.
Cloud BI can save companies money in a number of different ways. Not only is it cheaper to implement and maintain than traditional business intelligence systems, but it also has the potential to bring about a number of subsequent costs saving externalities.
When information can be obtained and shared so easily over the Cloud, the requirements for physical assets such as servers, equipment and transportation are diminished. This scope for cost savings is highlighted by a study from Cisco who found that they were able to save an estimated $277 million a year through activities the cloud helped them achieve.
Access to Insights and Shared Knowledge
Sharon Hurley Hall (@shurleyhall) discusses how the increasing importance of business analytics is affecting corporate culture in a Business2Community article. Cloud BI solutions are making it easier than ever for any employee within a company to access data and this is challenging the traditional corporate structure. Hall describes how “A collegial culture of shared knowledge stands in major contrast to the hierarchical structures that exist in many businesses”.
With greater access to this knowledge, employees are likely to feel much more engaged with the company contributing to the success whilst also having better insight to make more informed decisions. Cross collaboration of data may even negate the need for complex managerial structures as business users can easily produce and communicate better information through self-serve reporting and Cloud BI.
Nikolaus Kimla discusses further on how among other benefits, remote access through tools such as Cloud BI can bring an end to office politics that often have a detrimental effect on employee morale and their subsequent levels of work effort. With Cloud BI employees can work from anywhere and would provide a more comfortable work environment which may be conducive to greater levels of productivity. Productivity can also be increased by the time that employees would save on travelling to and from the office to access that data as they could get at it through any tablet or computer.
This infographic shows that working remotely has been found to result in a 13% increase in productivity and a substantial rise in work satisfaction. With Cloud BI business users can work away from the office allowing them to scale these benefits.
The increased rate of adoption of Cloud Technology over recent years means that a complete move away from the office is a real possibility in the not so distant future. But it’s not time to wave goodbye to your desk, the boardroom or those drunken office Christmas parties just yet. There still remains some doubts and myths surrounding Cloud BI which will slow the adoption of this tool.
