We’re delighted to announce that our Managing Director Matthew Scullion has recently been shortlisted as a Regional Finalist in the EY Entrepreneur of The Year awards. This prestigious award, now in its 18th year, aims to highlight the work of the UK’s most innovative entrepreneurs.
EY Entrepreneur Of The Year awards
The EY Entrepreneur Of The Year awards is a global programme aiming to highlight and recognise the achievements of some of the most successful business leaders around the world. The awards are now in their 30th year globally, and their 18th year in the UK.
This programme runs in more than 145 cities in over 60 countries around the world, making it a truly global contest.
Much closer to home, the UK award is contested by 145 finalists this year, spread across 4 regions; London & South, Midlands, North and Scotland. In the Northern Region, Matthew finds himself amongst 43 other Regional Finalists from a vast range of businesses and industries.

Driving Matillion forwards
Matthew founded Matillion back in 2011 with a vision to deliver “Business Intelligence and Self-Service Reporting” as-a-Service to mid-sized companies who struggle to turn their data into useful management information.
Since then, the company has grown considerably in size, and has sold Matillion BI to companies across the World, in the USA, Middle East, Europe and has a strong market back here in the UK.
To get better at delivering Matillion BI, we developed an innovative new ETL tool to help us move and handle ever larger quantities of data for our customers. Whilst originally developed for internal use, we quickly saw potential to sell our software to a wider market.
We now sell ‘Matillion ETL for Amazon Redshift’ to companies all over the World, through the AWS Marketplace. As a truly disruptive product in a growing market, Matillion ETL for Amazon Redshift is driving forward the domestic and international growth of our business.
Matthew continues to spearhead this growth, and this award is deserved recognition for his achievements in leading the business to this point. The future is certainly a bright one for Matillion.
From thousands of entries, Matthew was successful in making the shortlist of 43 finalists in the Northern Region.
The full list of regional finalists in the Northern Region can be found below.
A judging panel will now decide the winner in the Northern Region.
The Northern Region judging panel is chaired by Marnie Millard, Chief Executive Officer at soft drink manufacturer, Nichols. The panel consists of 11 other judges from some of the Norths’ leading businesses. Many of the judges are previous winners of this award themselves, so they know what it takes to win.
What happens next?
A panel of judges will interview each of the regional finalists at a judges’ reception day. This is an opportunity for the finalists to shine, and convince the judges that they deserve to crowned as the winner in their Region. The Northern Judges Reception takes place on Tuesday 17th May.
The winner will then be announced at the North awards dinner on Tuesday 21st June, where the judges will reveal who they have selected to go forward and represent the Northern Region at the UK awards dinner in early October.
A similar process will once again take place, with a Judges’ reception for the winning candidates from each UK Region.
The winner of the UK award, announced on Monday 3rd October, will then go on to represent the UK at the World Entrepreneur Of The Year awards in Monaco in June 2017.
