Hosts Mark Balkenede (Field CTO at Matillion) and Ciaran Dynes (CPO) were joined by Matthew Scullion, Co-Founder and CEO of Matillion, to showcase how Data Productivity Cloud is transforming the way businesses manage and extract value from data.

The Evolution of Matillion's Data Productivity Cloud

To kick off the event, the team took a look back at the origins of Matillion, and the journey we’ve been on to grow Data Productivity Cloud into what it is today. 

Matillion pioneered cloud ELT, and we've continued to evolve and mature our solutions and products in order to create a platform designed to meet the demands of modern enterprises.

By delivering enterprise-level scalability, speed, and efficiency, Data Productivity Cloud has already revolutionized the way our customers work with data. The intuitive interface empowers both low-code and high-code users, resulting in customers building pipelines 60-70% faster, reducing maintenance time by up to 80%, and tripling their productivity.

Eliminating Data Friction with AI and Automation

The name of the event was Zero Data Friction – so what does that really mean? Data friction is the critical challenge facing modern data teams: balancing increasing business demands against resource constraints like talent shortages and limiting factors like fragmented infrastructure.

Data Productivity Cloud was designed as an intelligent, unified solution specifically to address these pain points. By integrating AI-powered tools such as Matillion Copilot, organizations have dramatically streamlined their data processes and reduced friction points throughout the data pipeline.

For example; where PDFs, emails, and other unstructured data sources once required extensive manual processing, Data Productivity Cloud now effectively leverages AI to release the hidden value of these assets. This unlocks business intelligence that was previously inaccessible or time-consuming to obtain.

Across industries AI is revolutionizing how data is processed and interpreted, and it’s crucial organizations adapt, or risk falling behind. 

The Power of Copilot and Agentic AI

To highlight what’s possible with Matillion’s intelligent assistant, Copilot, the event featured a demo, showcasing how quickly and easily pipelines can be created (you can catch up here!). 

Copilot’s capabilities are continually improving, and it can now interact with Matillion’s components and user documentation, making intelligent suggestions to improve data pipelines. This is made possible by agentic AI, where multiple LLMs work behind the scenes to handle queries and optimize processes.

The combination of AI with tools like Git and data ops workflows helps reduce operational friction, ensuring that data engineers spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time on high-value work.

Looking Ahead: Roadmap and New Features

During the event we chatted a little about the important feedback that comes from our Customer Advisory Board (CAB), and how that’s helped to shape the development of Data Productivity Cloud. The three main themes from this year’s board were:

1. Accelerate the journey to Data Productivity Cloud. Existing Matillion ETL customers are excited to transition across, and leverage the enhanced capabilities of the new platform. 
2. Accelerate the journey to Copilot. Customers emphasized how valuable this tool will be in maximizing data engineering productivity. 
3. Take the next steps in further enhancing the platform for customer needs. We’re looking forward to continuing to work alongside our customers to deliver the new features they need most. 

Recently we’ve launched a high-code editor integrating SQL, Python, and dbt into the Data Productivity Cloud. We’ve improved unstructured data connectors and enhanced seamless data ops capabilities with Git integration. 

As we look to the future, we’re focused on expanding Copilot’s functionality and exploring solutions to improve data quality – a challenge highlighted by many of our CAB attendees.
