Matillion has become an integral part of our data journey, supporting the company's strategic shift towards decentralization and data mesh. Pablo Espinosa Lead Data Engineer| Naranja X

Challenge: Limited resource alongside growing business demands.

With a rich history in financial services spanning over 38 years, Naranja X has evolved into a digital powerhouse with a clear purpose: play a leading role in inclusion and financial education in the region. Transforming its business model to focus on providing a fluid digital experience, Naranja X boasts a wide range of financial services, over 6 million clients, more than 100,000 merchants in their network and the issuance of over 10 million credit and debit cards.

Pablo Espinosa, a seasoned professional with 15 years at Naranja X, leads Data Engineering, part of a Data Hub structure formed by Data Platform, Data Analytics, Data Governance and Advanced Analytics.

Bottlenecks in delivering services to users, a limited number of engineers in the team, and a prioritization dilemma, prompted the need for a strategic shift, Naranja X adopted a strategy of decentralization, aligning with the data mesh concept, aiming to empower individual squads to handle various tasks independently.

To achieve this, they required a robust data platform that could facilitate decentralization and allow user squads to perform their tasks efficiently.

Solution: User autonomy with full security and governance

In 2019, Naranjax transitioned to a cloud infrastructure, moving from on-premise to Amazon Web Services (AWS). A team of data engineers worked on building data pipelines, with all data transformations executed using Spark. In 2020, they incorporated Snowflake into their tech platform, aligning with the data mesh strategy. To accelerate data product delivery, Naranja X sought a low-code platform that enabled power users to develop data models, leading them to Matillion.

While considering different alternatives, including cloud based and SaaS solutions , Matillion's suitability for the team’s specific needs became evident. The unique features aligned perfectly with the new strategy, allowing each team to own its projects. The ease of use of Matillion empowered users to create complex transformations, and features such as shared jobs, integration with external providers, and Single Sign-On (SSO) ensured security across different environments.

The impact of Matillion is not only evident in the efficiency gains and reduced time to delivery but also in fostering a culture of autonomy among the teams. Pablo Espinosa Lead Data Engineer| Naranja X

Impact: Users of all coding skill levels empowered to succeed.

The reduction in time to deliver new data models since implementing Matillion is a significant win for the company. Matillion's speed and versatility has empowered both technical and non-technical users to build data models efficiently.

Data engineering teams were quick to leverage the platform, and non-technical users were up and running quickly. Matillion's ease of use facilitated the creation of an academy, enabling all employees to train and utilise the platform effectively. Currently, Naranja X has more than 200 data models created using Matillion, with 50 active users per month and over 70 users with full platform access.

Matillion has become an integral part of Naranjax's data journey, supporting the company's strategic shift towards decentralization and data mesh. The impact of Matillion is not only evident in the efficiency gains and reduced time to delivery but also in fostering a culture of autonomy among the teams.

My advice for anyone considering Matillion: focus on bringing results to the company and leverage [the platform] to accelerate impact rather than investing time in building custom solutions. Pablo Espinosa Lead Data Engineer| Naranja X

What’s next for Naranja X?

With plans to test the data loader feature and a keen eye on future releases in the Data Productivity Cloud, Naranja X continues to explore ways to enhance its data capabilities further.

In the future, Pablo envisions a chain of value where Matillion plays a key role in empowering the internal teams and reducing the development time of data products . The transformation towards becoming a robust digital entity is ongoing, with a focus on data mesh principles, autonomous teams, and advanced data science capabilities.

For those considering Matillion, Pablo’s advice is clear: focus on bringing results to the company and leverage tools like Matillion to accelerate impact rather than investing time in building custom solutions.
