Challenge: Legacy architecture failing to meet evolving business needs.

Tapi Carpets, a UK-based retailer specializing in various types of floor coverings, faced the challenge of scaling its data operations as rapid growth put increased pressure on its outdated systems. The legacy architecture struggled to keep up with the growing demand for near real-time data insights. As data sources multiplied and volumes increased, it became critical to enhance technological capabilities and bring in skilled personnel to meet the business’s evolving needs.

AJ Rajeswaran found external customer data platforms inadequate for their needs and began seeking a more robust solution to manage Tapi Carpets growing data demands.

Solution: A comprehensive customer data platform.

Billigence stepped in as a key partner to help Tapi Carpets reimagine its data architecture. The project began with an in-depth assessment of Tapi’s existing setup, followed by a proof of concept (POC) designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed tools. After proving successful, the POC was expanded into a full-scale data transformation. 

Billigence introduced Matillion and Snowflake to Tapi Carpets, selecting these tools for their scalability and seamless integration. Together, they built a metadata-driven automated data pipeline that was both scalable and easy to maintain. The integration of Matillion and Snowflake was smooth, and Matillion's drag-and-drop ETL solution made it easy for even non-technical team members to manage data processes. While the primary goal was to modernize data operations to handle growing volumes, AJ saw the potential to build a comprehensive in-house customer data platform, replacing an external service provider that could no longer efficiently meet their evolving needs. This setup drastically improved Tapi’s data handling, growing their capacity from 10 to over 200 tables, many of which updated in near real-time. 

Within eight weeks, Matillion's pipelines replaced Tapi's sales reporting system, demonstrating rapid deployment and efficiency in automating complex data orchestration. AJ, an accountant with limited technical background, managed data transformations through Matillion's user-friendly interface, which was built around business logic rather than intricate coding. 

Billigence’s involvement extended beyond the technical setup. They worked closely with the Tapi Carpets team, providing continuous support and acting as an extension of the organization. This collaborative approach ensured a smooth transition and long-term reliability for Tapi Carpets' data operations.

Tapi leveraged Matillion and Snowflake for various projects, including comprehensive data warehousing that consolidated hundreds of tables without data loss. This setup empowered different teams—from paid search to CRM and website optimization—to leverage unified, real-time data for enhanced decision-making.
